Creating the Spine of the DVD Case

This post will look at the process i took to create the spine of the DVD Wrap.

The spine of the case is the first point of vision when someone either looks at the DVD on their shelf after purchase or when they are browsing shelves to purchase DVD's therefore the information on the spine of the case has to be clear and give the name of the film and also the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) rating, which can be either U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18 or R18.

The first step in creating the spine of the DVD case, i filled in the background of the area set out by the guides I made in the first post about the DVD Wrap. I creating the background by simply setting the line and fill colour to the dark grey on the square shape tool and then create a rectangle to the size of the guides as seen in the image below.

Next i created a text layer for the title of the film, using the same font as the logo, i typed "Secrets of the Early Universe" and then applied the same FX as the layer for the Title. Below is an image of the title on the Spine.

The next step was to copy the logo from the front of the DVD wrap by duplicating there layer and changing the orientation so that it runs vertically in the same way as the title does. i then changed the size of the title and kept the same aspect ratio by holding the alt key on the keyboard whilst changing the size, see image below.

The next step of creating the spine of the DVD, was to add the rating in, i obtained a very high resolution image from the internet and imported it into photoshop, with the file format allowing transparency i did not have to remove the background. I resized the rating logo and put it in place under the logo. see image below.

The final section of the spine of the DVD was to add the same logo that will be used on the back of the DVD case on the spine. I did this by duplicating the layer, resizing and then putting in place at the top of the spine, see in image below.

Initial Sketches for DVD Amaray Wrap

In this post i will explore the layout that i will be using for the DVD Amaray Wrap, below is a screenshot of photoshop in which i have created a basic layout which has given me areas to work within when creating the wrap.

For example when creating the DVD wrap i will confine the title on the front of the wrap to the top of the page and within the black box i have created in the layout.

I have left the layer with this on within the photoshop project so i can refer back to it at different points during the design.

Below is a screenshot taken from photoshop showing the layout layer in photoshop. This shows that when i have created the logo within the DVD Wrap project i have kept it to within the area i set out in the layout template.

The next post will show the same process but with the DVD label, using Adobe Illustrator as the Digital Imaging Software.
